$/1k BTU is the price divided by thousands of BTU/h of rated cooling capacity, so a 9k head and a 36k multi-zone compare fairly. It ignores efficiency and cold-weather output: check SEER2, HSPF2 and "Heats to" for those, or let thesizing builder weigh them for your rooms.
Mini-splits by size
What to check before buying a single-zone mini-split
Size it to the room, not the house. A mini-split that is too big for its room short-cycles: it cools the air fast, shuts off and never runs long enough to pull humidity out. Rough guide: 9,000 BTU for up to about 400 sq ft, 12,000 for 450–550, 18,000 for 700–1,000 and 24,000 for 1,000–1,400 in a typical climate. The sizing builderadjusts that for your climate, ceiling height, sun and insulation.
Quick-connect vs. standard. DIY quick-connect units ship with a pre-charged line set: you screw the fittings together and open the valves. Standard units need the lines flared, pressure-tested and evacuated with a vacuum pump and micron gauge, which is why they are often cheaper per BTU and why many warranties require a licensed installer for them.
115 V or 230 V. 115 V units (usually 9k and 12k) run on a dedicated ordinary circuit. Anything larger is 230 V and needs a double-pole breaker and a disconnect at the outdoor unit.
Heating in the cold. Every unit here is a heat pump, but output falls as it gets colder. If it will be your main heat, compare the "Heats to" column and look for units on the NEEP cold-climate list.
